Early Life and Family
Vickilyn Reynolds was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She went to a performing arts school there, where she learned about acting and singing.
Family's Influence
Vickilyn grew up with her brothers, Ron Richardson and W. Franklyn Richardson. She and Ron loved watching musicals and movies. Ron encouraged her to become an artist instead of a nurse. Later, Ron became a successful actor himself. He even won a Tony Award in 1985 for his role in the musical Big River. Their older brother, W. Franklyn Richardson, became a church pastor.
Their father worked in the meat industry. Their mother ran a beauty salon from their home for thirty years.
Acting Career
Vickilyn Reynolds started her acting journey on television in 1987. Her first TV appearance was on the show Kate & Allie.
Early Film and TV Roles
In 1988, Vickilyn appeared in two movies: Crossing Delancey and I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. She also played Joann, Smokey's mother, in the popular 1995 film Friday.
In 1990, she got a role in a new CBS TV series called Sugar and Spice. In this show, she played one of two sisters who lived together and raised two orphaned teenagers.
Stage and Later Roles
Vickilyn also performed on stage. In 1998, she was in a play called Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk. She also joined the Broadway show Smoky Joe's Cafe. In 1999, she performed her own solo show in Hollywood.
In 2000, Vickilyn appeared in the play The Old Settler. A few years later, in 2003, she was in a television commercial for the Saturn Corporation. She also appeared on the TV show American Dreams and played a talk show host in the 2005 film When Do We Eat?. Another TV show she was on was 227.
Writing and Starring in a Musical
Vickilyn Reynolds also writes! She wrote the music and words for a musical called Hattie McDaniel: What I Need You to Know. She also starred in this musical, playing the role of Hattie McDaniel. Hattie McDaniel was a very important actress because she was the first African-American person to win an Oscar. This musical was performed in many theaters across the United States between 2008 and 2018.
