Early Life and Education
Victor Bolden went to Columbia University and earned his first degree in 1986. He then studied law at Harvard Law School, getting his law degree in 1989.
Legal Career
After law school, Bolden started his career as a fellow at a legal organization from 1989 to 1990. He then worked as a staff attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation until 1994.
From 1994 to 2000, he was an assistant counsel at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. This organization works to protect civil rights.
Later, from 2000 to 2005, he worked at a law firm called Wiggin & Dana. There, he handled many different types of business lawsuits.
He returned to the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund from 2005 to 2009, serving as their general counsel. This means he was the main lawyer for the organization.
Before becoming a judge, Bolden worked for the City of New Haven, Connecticut. From 2009 to 2014, he was the corporation counsel, which means he was the city's top lawyer.
Becoming a Federal Judge
On June 16, 2014, President Barack Obama chose Victor Bolden to become a federal judge. He was nominated for a position in the United States District Court for the District of Connecticut. This position became open when Judge Janet Bond Arterton took on a different role.
The process for becoming a federal judge involves several steps. First, a hearing was held on July 29, 2014, before the United States Senate Committee on the Judiciary. This committee reviews the qualifications of people nominated for judge positions.
On September 18, 2014, the committee voted to approve his nomination. Then, the full United States Senate voted on his nomination. On November 19, 2014, the Senate took a step called "cloture" to move the vote forward.
Finally, on November 20, 2014, the Senate confirmed Victor Bolden as a federal judge. He officially received his judicial commission on November 21, 2014, and began his important work.
