Victor R. McCrary, Jr. was born on May 16, 1955. He is an American scientist who studies chemistry. He works as the vice president for research at the University of the District of Columbia. Dr. McCrary is also a special member of the American Chemical Society. He used to be the president of a group called the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers. This group helps Black chemists and chemical engineers.

Early Life and Education

Victor McCrary grew up in Washington, D.C.. He loved learning about science. He went to college and earned several degrees. First, he got a Bachelor of Arts degree in chemistry from the Catholic University of America. Then, he earned a PhD in chemistry from Howard University. A PhD is a very high degree for scientists. Later, he also got a Master of Science degree from the University of Pennsylvania. This degree was in engineering and technology management.

Victor McCrary's Career

After finishing his studies, Dr. McCrary started working at Bell Labs. This was a famous place where many important inventions were made. In 1995, he joined the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Here, he led teams that worked on new computer systems.

In 2003, Dr. McCrary moved to the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory. He continued his important scientific work there. In 2007, he became the President of the National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE). This shows his leadership in the science community. Dr. McCrary also worked as a leader at the University of Tennessee and Morgan State University.

In October 2016, a big honor came his way. He was chosen by President Barack Obama to join the National Science Board. This board helps guide science and engineering in the United States. In July 2020, he became the vice chair of this important board.
