Victoria Bridge: A Cambridge Landmark

What is the Victoria Bridge?

The Victoria Bridge is a type of bridge called a single-arch road bridge. This means it has one big arch underneath that supports the road on top. It carries a road called Victoria Avenue. If you stand on the bridge and look north, you'll see Chesterton Road and a busy meeting point for other roads like Victoria Road and Milton Road.

Why was the bridge built?

The Victoria Bridge was built a long time ago, between 1889 and 1890. Its main job was to connect two areas. To the north was a village called Chesterton, which is now part of Cambridge. To the south was the main town of Cambridge. The bridge made it much easier for people to travel between these two places. At the same time, Victoria Avenue was built. This new road created a path that separated two green spaces: Jesus Green on one side and Midsummer Common on the other.

When was the bridge opened?

Building the bridge was a big event! The first stone was placed on November 4, 1889, by Frederic Wace. He was the mayor of Cambridge at that time. A mayor is like the leader of a city. The bridge was officially opened to everyone by Mayor Wace on December 11, 1890. It has been helping people cross the river ever since.

Did you know?

Even though the bridge is old, it's still strong! In 1992, the Victoria Bridge was rebuilt to make it even stronger and safer for everyone to use today.
