Victoria Quays facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Victoria Quays is a cool canal basin in Sheffield, England. It used to be called Sheffield Canal Basin. This area was built a long time ago, between 1816 and 1819. It was the end point for the Sheffield Canal, which is now part of a bigger waterway system. It also had old coal yards for trains.

For many years, Victoria Quays was a busy place where goods were loaded and unloaded from boats. But in 1970, it stopped being a cargo port. The buildings and the area became a bit forgotten. Then, from 1992 to 1994, the whole place got a big makeover! It was cleaned up and rebuilt, creating new offices, shops, and fun places. Now, you can even moor your leisure canal boats there.

There are some really old and important buildings at Victoria Quays. These are called Grade II listed buildings, which means they are protected because of their history. They include the original Terminal Warehouse from 1819, the Straddle Warehouse built around 1895-1898, a grain warehouse from about 1860, and a curved row of offices where coal merchants used to work, built around 1870.
