Vida Brest: A Life Story

Early Life and War Years

Vida Brest was born in a place called Šentrupert in Lower Carniola in 1925. When she was 17 years old, she joined a group that was fighting for freedom during World War II. This group was called the resistance movement. They worked to oppose the forces that had taken over their country.

During the war, Vida even had some of her first poems published by the Partisan press. The Partisans were groups of people who fought against the occupation of their country. They often lived in forests and mountains, using clever tactics to resist.

Becoming a Writer

After World War II ended, Vida Brest became a journalist and a teacher. Later, she decided to focus mostly on writing. Her own experiences during the war were a big source of ideas for her stories. She also wrote many wonderful fairy tales and stories for children.

In 1995, after she had passed away, a special collection of her best poems was published. A famous poet named Ivan Minatti chose and put together these poems.

Her Books and Awards

Vida Brest won an important award called the Levstik Award in 1984. She received this award for her book of stories from the resistance. The book was called Majhen človek na veliki poti, which means A Small Man on a Big Road. This award showed how much her writing was appreciated.
