This film also won two awards at the 21st International Film Festival of Kerala, including the Best Debutant Director Award for Vidhu Vincent.

Early Life and Career

Vidhu Vincent was born in Kollam, Kerala. After studying at Government College for Women, Thiruvananthapuram, she began her career as a television journalist with Asianet. During her time there, she became very interested in making documentaries and films. This led her to study at the Centre for Development of Imaging Technology in Thiruvananthapuram.

Her reports on important topics like Sand mining in Kerala, the struggles of Endosulfan victims in Kasaragod, and attacks on women created a lot of discussion in the Kerala Legislative Assembly and among people in Kerala. In 2003, she left her job at Asianet News to join a movement that supported local communities. She later took a break from journalism to earn master's degrees in Social Work and Philosophy. In 2014, she returned to journalism with a long essay about society in Manipur, India.

Working for Women's Rights

In 2010, Vidhu Vincent became the first President of Penkoottu. This is an organization that works to improve the lives of women who work in jobs that are not formally organized, like street vendors or domestic helpers.

In 2017, she played a key role in starting the Women in Cinema Collective. This group was formed to support female artists and workers in the Malayalam film industry and to address issues they faced, including violence.

Filmmaking Achievements

In 2015, Vidhu Vincent made a telefilm called Nadakaanthyam for MediaOne TV. This film was about a theatre actor's daily struggles. It won four major awards at the Kerala State Television Awards, including Best Direction, Best Screenplay, and Best Short Film for that year.

Vidhu Vincent also wrote a travelogue, which is a book about her travels, based on her trip to Germany. This book, titled Daivam Olivil Poya Naalukal, was published by Chintha Publishers.

In 2014, she directed a documentary called Vrithiyude Jathi (meaning Caste and Cleanliness) for Media One. This film showed the difficult lives of manual scavengers in Kerala. It was inspired by real events and focused on scavengers living in a neighborhood in Kollam.

Vidhu Vincent then turned her award-winning documentary into her first feature film, Manhole. This film was shown in the "International competition" section of the 21st International Film Festival of Kerala. Vidhu Vincent made history as the first woman from Kerala to have a film screened in this festival's history. At the festival, Manhole won two awards: the FIPRESCI Award for Best Malayalam Film and the "Silver Crow Pheasant Award" for Best Debutant Director for Vincent. The film also received a special mention from the John Abraham award.

In 2017, Vidhu Vincent received the Kerala State Film Award for Best Director at the 47th Kerala State Film Awards. She was the first woman to win this prestigious award. In 2020, she also received the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award for Travelogue for her book Daivam Olivil Poya Naalukal.
