Vienna is a small town located in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, in the United States. In 2020, about 483 people lived there.
During the American Civil War, soldiers from the Confederate army practiced their drills at a new camp set up in Vienna in 1862. Later in the war, a camp was created for soldiers who had been captured and then released, called a "parolee camp."
Vienna was once the main town, or "parish seat," of Lincoln Parish. This was from when the parish was created in 1873 until 1884. A vote by people across the parish decided to move the parish seat to Ruston, a new town that had grown up around the railroad.
History of Vienna
Around 1812, a person named Daniel Colvin settled near where Vienna is today.
The Colvin family ran a store or a place where travelers could stop and rest. Their house was close to a path that connected the cities of Monroe and Shreveport. In 1838, Jephthah Colvin, Daniel's son, opened the first post office in the area. It was first called Colvin's Post Office. The name was changed to Vienna in 1850.
Vienna was an important stop for stagecoaches traveling overnight on the Monroe-Shreveport Stagecoach Road. This road was later known as the Old Wire Road.
