Vigroids facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Vigroids (also known as Mighty Imps) were a type of liquorice sweet. These small, black candies were mainly sold as a special lozenge to help singers. They were known for their slogan, "for clarity of voice," meaning they helped make voices clear.

The main ingredient in Vigroids is liquorice juice. The company that made them warned that eating too much liquorice can raise blood pressure. So, people with high blood pressure were told not to eat more than 10 Vigroids a day. These sweets did not contain any sugar. They also had small amounts of other flavors like menthol, eucalyptus, and peppermint. These ingredients helped the pellets act like a breath mint, making your breath fresh.

The Story of Vigroids

Vigroids were first created in 1900 by a company called Ferris & Co. Ltd. They were chemists based in Bristol, England. The company advertised them with a special message:

For Hoarseness, "Tickling of the Throat," etc. They afford protection to the Voice, Throat, and Chest, against ill-effects of fog, cold and damp. Invaluable to singers and speakers.

This meant the sweets were good for a sore or scratchy throat. They were also said to protect your voice, throat, and chest from bad weather like fog or cold. Singers and speakers found them very helpful.

In 1974, another company named Ernest Jackson & Company Ltd bought the brand. Later, in 2010, the name of the sweets was changed from "Nigroids" to "Vigroids." The sweets were available on the Ernest Jackson website until late 2014, but they stopped being sold around 2015.
