Vijay filmography facts for kids
Vijay is a very popular Indian actor who mainly stars in Tamil language movies. He started acting when he was very young, appearing in about 9 films as a child. His father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, directed many of these early movies, including his first film, Vetri, in 1984.
Vijay took on his first main acting role in 1992 in the movie Naalaiya Theerpu. After that, he had a supporting role with Vijayakanth in Sendhoorapandi (1993). He continued to star in movies directed by his father, like Rasigan (1994) and Deva (1995). Some of these movies did well at the box office, meaning they earned a lot of money, even if critics didn't always love them.
Vijay's big break came in 1996 with the romantic movie Poove Unakkaga, directed by Vikraman. His next films, Nerrukku Ner (1997) by Vasanth and Kadhalukku Mariyadhai (1997) by Fazil, were very successful with both audiences and critics. His acting in Kadhalukku Mariyadhai even won him the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. He also won a Tamil Nadu State Award for Thulladha Manamum Thullum (1999).
As the new millennium began, Vijay continued his success with popular movies like Kushi and Priyamanavale. In 2001, he starred in three films: Friends, Badri, and Shahjahan. All of these movies ran in theaters for over 100 days! However, his later films Vasegara and Puthiya geethai didn't do as well.
His movie Thirumalai (2003), where he acted alongside Jyothika, changed his image into an action hero. He then played a kabaddi player with Trisha in Dharani's Ghilli (2004). This movie became the most successful Tamil film of that year. It was also the first Tamil film to earn ₹500 million (which is 50 crore Indian rupees)! His role as a caring brother in Thirupachi (2005) earned him another Tamil Nadu State Award. He continued to have big hits with Sivakasi (2005) and Pokkiri (2007).
From 2007 to 2009, some of his movies like Azhagiya Thamizh Magan (where he played two roles for the first time) and Villu were moderately successful, except for Vettaikaaran (2009), which did well. However, his 50th movie, Sura (2010), was not a success.
In 2011, Vijay's career got even better after he was praised for his role as a bodyguard in Kaavalan. The next year, he appeared in two successful films: Nanban, where he played a college student, and Thuppakki, where he was an army officer. Both of his performances received great reviews. He then starred in A. L. Vijay's Thalaivaa (2013) and the movie Jilla (2014), which also featured Mohanlal. Both of these films were successful.
He worked again with director Murugadoss on the action movie Kaththi (2014). In this film, Vijay played two different roles: a thief and a good-hearted idealist. Kaththi became one of the highest-earning Tamil films that year. His next movie, Puli (2015), where he played a tribal warrior, was not a commercial success. The following year, he played a police officer in Theri (2016). This movie had one of the biggest opening weekends in Tamil cinema history, earning about ₹1.5—1.56 billion (150-156 crore rupees) worldwide. It is one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of all time.
