S. A. Chandrasekhar (born on July 2, 1945) is a famous Indian film director, producer, writer, and actor. He mainly works in the Kollywood film industry, which is the Tamil film industry. He started his journey as a director with the movie Aval Oru Pachai Kuzhanthai in 1978. He became well-known after directing Sattam Oru Iruttarai in 1981. Chandrasekhar has directed over 70 movies in various South Indian languages. He is especially known for making films that talk about important social issues.

Chandrasekhar was born in Thangachimadam, a place in Tamil Nadu. He comes from a Vellalar Catholic Christian family. His son is Vijay, who is one of the biggest actors in Tamil cinema today. Chandrasekhar also had a daughter named Vidya, who sadly passed away when she was two years old. His brother-in-law, S. N. Surendar, is a singer and voice artist. His nephew, Vikranth, is also an actor.

Chandrasekhar has directed more than 70 movies. These films are in different languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Many famous directors today, like S. Shankar and M. Rajesh, started their careers by working as assistants with him.

Acting Roles

Besides directing, Chandrasekhar has also acted in supporting roles in some movies. Some of these films include Kudumbam (1984), Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985), and Kodi (2016). In 2015, at the age of 70, he took on a lead role in the movie Touring Talkies. This was also the last movie he directed.

After a short break, S. A. Chandrasekhar returned to filmmaking. He directed a movie in 2018 called Traffic Ramasamy. This film was a true story about a social activist. In 2019, he directed his 70th film, which was titled Capmaari.
