S. A. Chandrasekhar, born on July 2, 1945, is a well-known Indian film director, producer, writer, and actor. He is mostly famous for his work in the Tamil film industry, also known as Kollywood. He directed his first movie, Aval Oru Pachai Kuzhanthai, in 1978. He became very successful with his film Sattam Oru Iruttarai in 1981. He has directed more than 70 movies in different South Indian languages. He is known for making films that talk about important social issues.

Chandrasekhar was born in Thangachimadam, a place in Tamil Nadu, India. He comes from a Catholic Christian family. His son is Vijay, who is one of the most popular actors in Tamil cinema today. Chandrasekhar also had a daughter named Vidya, who sadly passed away when she was only two years old. His brother-in-law, S. N. Surendar, is a singer and voice artist in films. His nephew, Vikranth, is also an actor.
His Journey in Films
Chandrasekhar has directed over 70 movies. These films are in various languages like Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi. Many famous directors today, such as S. Shankar and M. Rajesh, started their careers by working as assistants with him.
Some of his very popular movies include Sattam Oru Iruttarai (1981), Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985), and Senthoorapandi (1993).
He played a big role in starting his son Vijay's acting career. He directed many of Vijay's early films. These include Naalaiya Theerpu (1992), Senthoorapandi (1993), Rasigan (1994), Deva (1995), and Vishnu (1995). Most of his movies feature either Vijay or another popular actor named Vijayakanth.
Chandrasekhar also directed Telugu movies like Chattaniki Kallu Levu (1981) and Palletoori Monagadu (1983). These films starred the famous actor Chiranjeevi.
Besides directing, he has also acted in supporting roles in several movies. Some of these include Kudumbam (1984), Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985), and Kodi (2016).
In the early 2000s, Chandrasekhar directed fewer films. He focused more on other projects, like building a hotel for his son. He returned to directing later. At the age of 70, he starred as the main actor in his own film, Touring Talkies (2015). This was also his last movie as a director at that time. Later, in 2018, he directed Traffic Ramasamy, a film about a social activist. In 2019, he directed his 70th film, called Capmaari.
