Viktor Ivanovich Cherepkov (Russian: Виктор Иванович Черепков; 16 April 1942 – 2 September 2017) was an important Russian figure. He was a naval officer and a politician. He served as a Deputy in the State Duma, which is like a parliament, for two terms. He also served as the mayor of Vladivostok twice.

Who Was Viktor Cherepkov?
Viktor Cherepkov was born in 1942. He grew up to become a respected military officer. Later, he entered the world of politics. He was known for his strong will and determination.
Viktor Cherepkov first studied at a railway technical school. After that, he went to the Pacific Higher Military-Sea School. This prepared him for a career in the navy.
He served in the Pacific Fleet for many years. This was part of both the Soviet and later the Russian Navy. He served from 1967 until 1993. When he left the navy, he held the high rank of Captain 1st rank.
His Time as Mayor of Vladivostok
In 1990, Viktor Cherepkov began his political career. He was chosen as a deputy for the council in Primorsky Krai. This was his first step into public service.
First Term as Mayor
In 1993, Cherepkov became the Mayor of Vladivostok. This was a big responsibility. About a year into his term, he faced some challenges. He was temporarily removed from his duties as mayor.
Even though local officials later dropped the accusations against him, the Russian President at the time, Boris Yeltsin, decided to remove him from his position.
Returning to Office
Cherepkov did not give up. In 1996, he got his position back as mayor. The State Duma said that his earlier removal was not correct. President Yeltsin then issued an order to officially bring Cherepkov back.
His second time as mayor lasted about two years. In November 1998, President Yeltsin again decided to temporarily remove him from office.
In January 1999, Cherepkov was elected to the city council of Vladivostok. However, a local court later cancelled this election.
National Politics and Later Years
In 2000, Viktor Cherepkov won a seat in the State Duma. This meant he was now working in national politics. He was re-elected to this position in 2004.
In December 2011, Cherepkov announced he wanted to run for President of Russia. This was for the 2012 elections. He was nominated as a candidate. However, he did not submit all the required signatures to officially register.
In 2013, Cherepkov tried again to become mayor of Vladivostok. He ran with the Green Alliance Party. He finished second in that election.
His Passing
Viktor Cherepkov passed away on September 2, 2017. He died from cancer in a hospital in Moscow. According to his wishes, he was buried in Vladivostok.
