Vilander, Missouri facts for kids
Vilander was once a small town in the eastern part of Crawford County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. Today, it is considered an extinct town, which means it no longer exists as a populated place. The GNIS (Geographic Names Information System) lists it as a historical location.
Where Was Vilander Located?
The site of the former town was on the south side of Brazil Creek. This spot was about two miles upstream from where Brazil Creek flows into the Meramec River. Another small community, Anthonies Mill, is located about 2.5 miles upstream from Vilander in nearby Washington County.
How Did Vilander Get Its Name?
Vilander had a post office that opened in 1885. It stayed open for many years until 1920. The community was named by an early postmaster. She used the middle name of her husband, Calvin Vilander Lynch, to name the town.
