Chapel in Vilardida

Vilardida is a small village located in the Alt Camp region of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. It sits at an elevation of 285 meters (about 935 feet) above sea level. The village is found at a "T" junction on the main C51 road, which connects El Vendrell and Valls. It's also very close to exit 11 of the AP2 motorway, making it easy to reach from cities like Barcelona and Lleida.

What Does the Name Vilardida Mean?

The name Vilardida means "burnt village" when translated. This name was first recorded in the year 1009 as Villa Ardidam. It is believed to have gotten this name because of fires started by the Bishops from Barcelona around that time.

How Many People Live in Vilardida?

Vilardida is a very small village. In 2003, there was some confusion about its exact population, with numbers ranging from three to 27 people. This is likely because the village is managed by two different local governments: Vila-rodona and Montferri. Today, it is thought that about 10 people live in Vilardida. The village itself covers an area of about 10,000 square meters (about 2.5 acres).

Buildings and History

The village has a small church called Saint Mary of Vilardida, which was built in the 18th century. However, many of the other buildings in Vilardida are much older, dating back to the 15th century. This shows that the village has a long history.

Vilardida's Location and Natural Surroundings

Vilardida is located in an area known for growing grapes and making wine. It sits on the edge of a small, fertile plain that sometimes floods. The village is only about 400 meters (about 1,300 feet) from the River Gaià. This river flows all year round and eventually empties into a large reservoir. This reservoir is shared by three nearby towns: Renau, Vilabella, and El Catllar. From there, the River Gaià continues its journey and flows into the Mediterranean Sea at Altafulla, close to the historic Tamarit castle.
