Villafranca Montes de Oca is a small town located in northern Spain. It is found in the province of Burgos, which is part of the Castile and León region. In 2018, about 119 people lived in this municipality. It's known for its long history, especially as an important religious center in the past.
A Town with a Long History
Villafranca Montes de Oca was once known as Oca. It was a very important place for the early Christian church in Spain. As early as the 6th century, Oca was the home of a "bishopric." A bishopric is an area led by a bishop, who is an important leader in the church.
The bishops of Oca even attended important meetings, like the Third Council of Toledo in 589 AD. During this time, many monasteries (places where monks live) were built in the area.
However, in the 8th century, the town of Oca was attacked and destroyed by Arab Muslim invaders. Because of this, the bishops of Oca had to move from place to place. Eventually, in 1075, the bishopric of Oca was officially closed down. Its duties were taken over by the new Diocese of Burgos.
Today, the old bishopric of Oca is remembered as a special historical title.
