How Juan Mata Plays
For me good football is not about how many skills you show or how many players you beat. It's about making the right decision every time you have the ball. I see players that make 100% right decisions – Iniesta and Xavi – but there are also good English examples. Scholes, Lampard and Gerrard made many more right decisions than wrong decisions. You see so many players with physical qualities. They are quick and strong but they don't make the right decisions. So for me the most important thing is to do what the game asks from you in the moment. You naturally know what is right which is why, even though you have to think about defensive duties and structure, once you're on the pitch you have to be free in your mind."
Juan Mata is known for his role as a playmaker. He usually plays as an attacking midfielder behind the main strikers. He can also play on either wing (side of the field). Sometimes, he plays as a second striker.
Mata is not the fastest player, but he makes up for it with his excellent control, technique, and passing skills. He has great creativity and vision, which means he can see passes and opportunities that others might miss. This allows him to link up well with his teammates and create many assists, as well as score goals himself.
He is a smaller player, standing at about 1.70 meters (5 feet 7 inches). He is not very strong physically or good at heading the ball. However, he is quick, agile, and moves well. He mostly uses his left foot and is also very good at taking free kicks. Some people have said that he could improve his defensive skills and work rate.
