Villanueva is a city in the Mexican state of Zacatecas. It is the main city and administrative center of the Villanueva municipality.

How Villanueva Got Its Name

Villanueva was started on February 4, 1692. Its first name was Villagutierre del Águila. Like many towns in Mexico, people added the name of a patron saint. For Villanueva, it was Judas Thaddaeus. So, the town became Villa de San Judas Tadeo de Villa Gutierre del Águila.

However, it was the newest town in that part of Zacatecas. Because of this, people started calling it Villa Nueva, which means "New Town". This shorter, simpler name is the one that stayed.

Where is Villanueva Located?

Villanueva is one of the 58 municipalities in the state of Zacatecas. It is in the southern part of the state. Many other Zacatecas municipalities surround it.

  • To the north, it borders Jerez.
  • To the east, it borders Genero Codina.
  • To the south, it borders Tabasco.
  • To the west, it borders Tepetongo.

Some areas of Villanueva have mountains. Rivers and other fresh water bodies also flow through the area. The climate is sub-humid, meaning it's not too dry. The average yearly temperature is about 16.9 degrees Celsius.
