History of Villarreal
Let's look at the past of Villarreal.
Early Beginnings
Back in the 1200s, a king named Sancho I of Portugal gave this village to a special group. This group was a military order called the Order of Aviz. Think of them like a knightly organization.
Leaders of the Area
At that time, a person named Gonçalo Viegas was in charge of the Villarreal area. He was the commander for the Order of Aviz.
Understanding the Border Dispute
Villarreal is in a place where the border between Portugal and Spain is not fully agreed upon. This means there's a disagreement about which country it truly belongs to.
Location and Neighbors
The village sits across the river from two fortified Portuguese villages. These are Juromenha and Alandroal.
Changes Over Time
In the past, Villarreal was not part of Olivenza, as it is today. It used to belong to Juromenha and was called Aldeia da Ribeira. Later, it became part of the Kingdom of Spain. After that, it was known as a pedanía (a small local area) within the Olivenza municipality.
