A Look at Villaseco's History
Villaseco de los Reyes has a long history, going back to the Middle Ages. It was founded when kings from the Kingdom of León encouraged people to move into and settle new areas.
Early Beginnings
The town became part of the Ledesma area in the 12th century. This happened when King Fernando II of León created the "alfoz" (a type of district) of Ledesma. Villaseco also belonged to the Ledesma church district.
A Royal Connection
A historian named Manuel Gómez-Moreno believed that the hermitage (a small chapel) of Our Lady of the Kings was built in the late 13th century. It was requested by Infante Don Sancho Pérez. An "Infante" is a title for a child of a Spanish or Portuguese king. Don Sancho Pérez was the lord of Ledesma and many other villages. He was the grandson of King Alfonso X the Wise.
Modern Times
In 1833, Spain changed its provinces. Villaseco de los Reyes became part of the Salamanca province. This province was part of the larger Leonese Region.
Between 1965 and 1970, a big project happened near the town. The Almendra Dam was built. This dam created a large reservoir. Sadly, it flooded some of the best farming lands in the northern part of the municipality.
