Discover Villelaure's Past

Villelaure has a long and interesting history, stretching back many centuries.

How Villelaure Got Its Name

The name Villelaure comes from a very old Roman settlement called Villa Laura. This settlement was either right where the village is now or very close by. People have lived in this area since Roman times.

A Time of Trouble and Rebuilding

Like many places in the southern Luberon region, Villelaure faced tough times in the 1300s. It was badly damaged by the Hundred Years War, a long conflict, and also by the terrible disease known as the Black Death. These events caused a lot of destruction and made many people leave.

New Beginnings in the 1400s

After these difficult times, people began to move back to the area. Between 1460 and 1560, about 6,000 people came to Villelaure and nearby villages. Many of these new residents came from the alpine valleys of Piedmont and other mountain areas.

Founding the Modern Village

In 1512, an important step was taken to rebuild Villelaure. A woman named Antoinette de la Terre, along with her husband Jean de Forbin, helped establish the village. They brought 19 families from nearby areas and from Piedmont to settle there, helping Villelaure grow into the community it is today.
