Vimaladharmasuriya I was an important king of Sri Lanka. He was also known by other names like Konappu Bandara and Dom Joan of Austria. He ruled the Kandyan Kingdom from 1590 to 1604. This kingdom was located in the central hills of Sri Lanka.
Vimaladharmasuriya I is famous for successfully defending his kingdom. He fought against the Portuguese, who were trying to take control of the island. He won two big battles against them.

A Strong Leader for Kandy
Vimaladharmasuriya I became king in 1590. He took over the Kandyan Kingdom. This kingdom was a powerful area in the middle of Sri Lanka. He worked hard to make his kingdom strong.
