Early Beginnings of Vina
The area now known as Vina was first settled by a person named Hiram Good. He was an "Indian hunter" who claimed land there in 1857. At that time, the place was called Lower Deer Creek.
The name changed to Vina in the 1860s. This happened when a winery was started in the area. The word "Vina" comes from the Spanish word for "vineyard", which is a place where grapes are grown. A post office has been open in Vina since 1871.
Leland Stanford's Giant Ranch
In 1881, a very important person named Leland Stanford started buying land around Vina. He was a railroad owner and a former governor of California. He created a huge ranch that was about 55,000 acres (22,258 hectares) big.
This ranch had the largest vineyard in the world at the time. It covered 4,000 acres (1,619 hectares) and had 3 million grapevines! The ranch also grew fruits, vegetables, and grains. It was home to hundreds of horses, cattle, and pigs.
Stanford's wines were not very successful. So, he decided to make medicinal brandy instead. The village of Vina grew along with the ranch. At its busiest, Vina had about 1,300 people. It even had two hotels and five saloons. After Stanford passed away, his wife, Jane Stanford, tried to keep the ranch going until at least 1898.
The Abbey of New Clairvaux
Later, in 1955, a property called the Flynn Ranch in Vina was sold. It became the site of the Vina Monastery. In 1959, this monastery officially became the Abbey of New Clairvaux. It is a place where monks live and pray.
