Vincent Matthew Darius was an important religious leader. He was a Bishop in the Roman Catholic Church. He served the Diocese of Saint George's in Grenada. He was the Bishop from 2002 until he passed away in 2016. He was also a member of the Dominican Order, which is a religious group.

Early Life and Education
Vincent Darius was born on September 6, 1955. His hometown was Crochu, a small village in Grenada. Crochu is part of the Saint Andrew's area.
He went to the local Catholic primary school. After that, he attended Grenada Boys' Secondary School. For three years, he worked as a teacher. He taught at Pomme Rose RC Primary School.
In 1978, he decided to join the Dominican Order. This religious group was based at Mount Saint Ervans.
Becoming a Priest
In 1979, Vincent Darius joined the novitiate. This is a special time for training in a religious order. He made his first promise to the order on September 15, 1980.
He moved to Trinidad and lived at the Holy Cross Priory in Arima. There, he studied to become a priest. He attended the Seminary of St John Vianney and the Uganda Martyrs in St Augustine. He also studied at the Universidad Central de Bayamón in Puerto Rico. Later, he went to the Aquinas Institute of Theology in St Louis, Missouri. He earned a special certificate in spiritual guidance there.
Serving as a Priest
Vincent Darius became a priest on June 28, 1987. Bishop Lester Guilly ordained him. The ceremony took place in his childhood church, St Martin de Porres, in Crochu.
The next year, he was chosen to lead his order's training house in Puerto Rico.
Returning to Grenada
When he came back to Grenada, he became the pastor of Saint Paul's church. A year later, he became the pastor of Grand Anse. In 1989, he took on a new role. He became a promoter of justice for his order in the Caribbean. He served in this role for six years.
He was also chosen twice to be the first leader of a new house. This house was in Roxborough, Saint Paul's. Vincent Darius held many other positions in his home diocese. He was part of important church councils.
Becoming a Bishop
On July 10, 2002, a big announcement was made. Pope John Paul II chose Vincent Darius to be the fourth Bishop of St George's in Grenada. At that time, Darius was working as a spiritual director for a seminary.
This was a special moment for Grenada. He was the first person born in Grenada to become the Bishop of this diocese. He was also the first bishop from a religious order in a long time.
Bishop's Ceremony
Bishop Darius was officially made a bishop on October 2, 2002. Bishop Sydney Charles led the ceremony. Archbishop Kelvin Felix and Bishop Malcolm McMahon also helped.
In 2003, his former university in Puerto Rico gave him an honorary degree. They also gave him an award for his outstanding achievements.
Bishop's Coat of Arms
A bishop's coat of arms is a special shield. It has symbols that tell a story about the bishop.
- The top part of the shield has red, yellow, and green colors. These colors represent the national flag of Grenada.
- The right side shows the black and white symbol of his Dominican Order. It also has a mountain and a rising sun, which represent his family.
- The middle part shows the Caribbean Sea and the islands of his diocese. These islands are Grenada, Carriacou, and Petit Martinique.
- The left side has the back of the Miraculous Medal. This shows respect for the Virgin Mary, who is a special patron for the diocese.
His motto was: "Proclaim the Good News." This means to share the message of hope and faith.
Passing Away
Bishop Vincent Darius passed away on April 26, 2016. He was 60 years old. He had been battling pneumonia and was receiving medical care in New York City.
His sisters and other family members were with him in New York. The diocese shared that his death was not a surprise. Bishop Darius had been unwell and could not attend a major meeting of bishops that year.
