Early Life and Education
Vincent Mason grew up in Long Island, New York. He finished high school in 1988, graduating from Amityville Memorial High School.
Music Career with De La Soul
Forming De La Soul
Vincent Mason joined his friends Kelvin Mercer (known as "Posdnuos") and David Jude Jolicoeur (known as "Trugoy the Dove") in 1987. Together, they formed the hip hop group De La Soul. They caught the attention of a producer named Prince Paul with their demo song "Plug Tunin'". Prince Paul helped them get a record deal with Tommy Boy Records. He also produced their first album, 3 Feet High and Rising.
Mason's Role in the Group
Mason's main job in De La Soul is being the DJ. He loves being a DJ and says he is "a b-boy to my heart." He gets ideas for his music from his own life and from what's happening in the world.
Even though he's mainly a DJ, Mason has also sung on some songs. You can hear his voice on "Ring Ring Ring (Ha Ha Hey)" from the album De La Soul Is Dead. He also sang on the Jungle Brothers' song "Doin' Our Own Dang." Mason even recorded the funny laugh at the beginning of De La Soul's song with Gorillaz, called "Feel Good Inc.".
Beyond De La Soul
Mason is also part of a group called Spitkicker. This group includes many creative artists. They release music and art by Spitkicker artists. They also work on projects that help communities.
Vincent Mason's Aliases
All three members of De La Soul have different names they use. Here are the most important ones for Vincent Mason:
- P.A. Pasemaster Mase: This was Mason's first alias. "Pasemaster" was used instead of "DJ." While "Mase" is a short form of Mason, he once said it could stand for "Making A Soul Effort." Later, after the album De La Soul is Dead came out, the name "Maseo" became very popular.
- Plug Three: When De La Soul was making their first album, 3 Feet High and Rising, they had an idea that music was coming from Mars through three microphone plugs. Each plug stood for one member of the group. Even though they didn't use this idea fully, the names "Plug One," "Plug Two," and "Plug Three" were still used on the album.
Personal Life
Vincent Mason was born in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up on Long Island, which is where he met the other members of De La Soul. His parents are Dorothy Robinson and Vincent Mason. He is the older of two children. His younger brother is Anthony Mason. Vincent Mason has four children: Marcus, Tre, Chauncey, and Dayo Mason. His son, Tre Mason, played football as a running back for the Los Angeles Rams.
