The Name: Vinegar Bend
Have you ever wondered how places get their names? Vinegar Bend has a fun story behind its unusual name! One popular tale says that the name came from an accident. A long time ago, a container filled with vinegar burst open at a freight station. This station was located near a bend in the river.
Because of this unique story, Vinegar Bend is often listed among places with very unusual names.
A Look Back in Time
In the 1940s, a writer named Lucius Beebe visited Vinegar Bend. He wrote about how the community had changed over the years. An older resident told him that around the year 1900, Vinegar Bend was a very busy place.
It had a large wood-planing mill, many stores, homes, and even a big hotel with 42 rooms. The railroad was also very active, with several trains moving through the area. Life in Vinegar Bend was once quite fast-paced and exciting!

Wilmer Mizell was born just across the state line in Mississippi. However, his family's home was on the mail route for Vinegar Bend. Because of this, Vinegar Bend was recorded as his birthplace. He even earned the nickname "Vinegar Bend" Mizell!
