Violeta Bermúdez Valdivia is a Peruvian lawyer, writer, and diplomat. She was born on August 12, 1961. From November 2020 to July 2021, she served as the Prime Minister of Peru. Before this important role, she worked in different government positions and with the United States Agency for International Development.

Violeta Bermúdez has held several important roles throughout her career. These jobs helped her work for the people of Peru.
Early Roles and Human Rights
From 1997 to 2002, Violeta Bermúdez worked as the Human Rights Coordinator for the United States Agency for International Development in Peru. In this role, she helped make sure people's basic rights were respected.
In 2002, President Alejandro Toledo chose her to be the Vice-Minister of the Ministry of Women's Promotion and Human Development. This meant she helped lead efforts to support women and human development in the country. She also helped create new rules to make society fairer for everyone.
A year later, in 2003, she became the Chief of the Cabinet of Advisors for Prime Minister Beatriz Merino. This job involved giving advice and support to the Prime Minister.
Working for Decentralization
Between 2012 and 2017, Bermúdez worked again with the United States Agency for International Development. She was the Director of a project focused on "decentralization." This means helping to spread power and decision-making from the main government in the capital city to local governments in different regions. This helps communities have more say in their own development.
Becoming Prime Minister
On November 18, 2020, President Francisco Sagasti chose Violeta Bermúdez to be the Prime Minister of Peru. She took over this role when there was a lot of public unhappiness in the country. As Prime Minister, she was the head of the government cabinet. She was the fifth woman in Peru's history to hold this very important position. Her term ended on July 28, 2021.

Violeta Bermúdez was born in Lima, the capital city of Peru. She went to two well-known universities in Peru to study law: the National University of San Marcos and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru. She is married to Samuel Abad Yupanqui, who is also a lawyer.
