Vire was once a special type of town called a commune in Lower Normandy, a region in northwestern France. It was located in the Calvados department. On January 1, 2016, Vire joined with other nearby communes to form a larger new commune called Vire-Normandie. This means Vire is now a part of this bigger area.

What is a Commune?
In France, a commune is like a small town or local government area. It's the smallest division for how the country is organized. Each commune has its own mayor and local council. They manage things like schools, roads, and local services for the people living there.
History of Vire
Vire has a long history. It was home to an old castle, the Donjon de Vire. Parts of this castle, like its tower, date back to the 11th century. Today, you can still see the ruins of this ancient building.
Vire During World War II
During World War II, many towns in France were affected. Vire was heavily damaged in 1944 due to bombardments. After the war, the town was rebuilt. This shows how resilient the people of Vire were.
Geography and Landscape
Vire is located in a beautiful area known as the "bocage virois." A "bocage" is a type of landscape. It has many small fields separated by hedges, trees, and small woods. This makes the area look like a patchwork quilt from above. It's a very green and natural place.
Vire-Normandie Today
Since 2016, Vire has been part of Vire-Normandie. This new, larger commune helps different towns work together. They can share resources and plan for the future more easily. Vire-Normandie continues to be an important place in the Calvados department.
