Viriato Correia (born Manuel Viriato Correia Baima do Lago Filho) was an important Brazilian writer, journalist, and politician. He was born on January 23, 1884, and passed away on April 10, 1967.

Viriato Correia's Early Life and Education

Viriato Correia was born in 1884 in Pirapemas, a city in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. His parents were Manuel Viriato Correia Baima and Raimunda Silva Baima. When he was young, his family moved to São Luís. There, he attended primary school at Colégio São Luís and later went to Liceu Maranhense for secondary school.

Viriato started his writing journey at just 16 years old. He began by writing poetry and short stories. After finishing his preparatory courses, he moved to Recife and started studying law. He studied law for three years there.

His original plan was to move to Rio de Janeiro to finish his law degree. However, he soon became part of the "Carioca Bohemian life." This was a lively, artistic way of life common among many Brazilian thinkers at that time.

In 1903, while still in Maranhão, Viriato published his first book. It was a collection of stories called Minaretes. This book marked the official start of his career as a writer. A famous critic named João Ribeiro didn't like the book's title. He thought the Arab-inspired name didn't fit the stories about the Brazilian countryside (sertanejo) that were inside.

Viriato did finish his law course in Rio de Janeiro in 1907. But he didn't work much as a lawyer. Instead, he became well-known for his work in literature, journalism, and politics. A friend, Medeiros e Albuquerque, helped him get a job at a newspaper called Gazeta de Notícias. Over the years, Viriato wrote for many different newspapers. These included Jornal do Brasil and Correio da Manhã. He also wrote for magazines like A Noite Ilustrada and O Tico-Tico. He even started two of his own newspapers, Fafazinho and A Rua.

Viriato Correia's Political Career

Viriato Correia entered politics in 1911. He was elected as a state deputy for Maranhão. This meant he helped make laws for his home state. Later, in 1927 and 1930, he became a federal deputy for Maranhão. This role meant he helped make laws for the whole country.

He stopped being involved in politics in 1930. This happened after a big change in the government, known as the 1930 Revolution, which led to his arrest. After this, he focused completely on his writing. He wrote many different types of books, including novels, plays, children's books, and historical stories.

Brazilian Academy of Letters

Viriato Correia was a respected member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters. This is a very important group of writers and thinkers in Brazil. He held the 32nd chair in the Academy. He was chosen on July 14, 1938, taking over from Ramiz Galvão. He was officially welcomed into the Academy by Múcio Leão on October 29, 1938.

Death

Viriato Correia passed away on April 10, 1967. He was 83 years old and died in Rio de Janeiro.
