In 1986, he finished high school in his hometown. After high school, he worked at the school radio station. From 1987 to 1989, he completed his military service in the Soviet Army.

From 1989 to 1990, Vlad studied at the Cooperation College in Chișinău. He then went on to study law at the University of Iași from 1990 to 1994.
During his time as a student, he was a leader of the "League of students from Bessarabia in Romania." This group was made up of Moldovan students studying in Romania.
Starting a Business Career
After finishing his studies, Vlad Filat started and managed several businesses in Romania. From 1994 to 1997, he was the general director of "RoMold Trading SRL" in Iași. He also served as the president of the Administrative Council for the "Dosoftei" company in Iași from 1997 to 1998.
Beginning in Politics
Vlad Filat became a member of the Democratic Party of Moldova (PDM) in 1997, the year the party was created. He returned to Moldova in 1998. He was appointed as the general director of the Department of Privatization and State Property Administration within the Ministry of Economy and Reform.

From March 12, 1999, to November 12, 1999, he served as a State minister in the Ion Sturza government. In 2000, Filat was elected as the vice-president of the Democratic Party.
In the 2005 parliamentary election, he was elected as a member of the Moldovan Parliament. He was also a member of the EU-Moldova Parliamentary Cooperation Committee.
Leading a New Party
In 2007, Vlad Filat ran for Mayor of Chișinău in the local elections. He received 8.32% of the votes. Soon after, in September 2007, he left the Democratic Party after ten years. Since December 2007, Filat has been the president of the Liberal Democratic Party of Moldova.

By the end of August 2009, he was chosen as the Alliance's candidate for the position of Prime Minister of Moldova.
Serving as Prime Minister

On September 25, 2009, the Alliance for European Integration approved the new government led by Prime Minister Vladimir Filat.
Changes in Government Leadership
On March 8, 2013, Filat's government faced a vote of no confidence in parliament. Despite this, President Nicolae Timofti stated that government members should continue their duties until a new government was formed.
On April 10, 2013, the President nominated Vlad Filat again to form a new government. However, on April 22, 2013, the Constitutional Court ruled that this nomination was not allowed. The court stated that a prime minister removed by a vote of no confidence should not continue in that role. The president then appointed Iurie Leancă as acting prime minister on April 25, 2013.
