Marian Lupu (born June 20, 1966) is a politician and economist from Moldova. He was the leader of Moldova's Parliament from 2010 to 2013. During this time, he also served as the acting President of Moldova from 2010 to 2012.

Early Life and Education
Marian Lupu was born in Bălți, Moldova, on June 20, 1966. When he was six, his family moved to Chişinău, the capital city. His father, Ilie Lupu, was a math professor at the Moldova State University. His mother taught French.
School and University
Marian Lupu went to "Gheorghe Asachi" High School in Chişinău until 1983. He then studied Economics at Moldova State University until 1987. He continued his studies at Plekhanov Moscow Institute of the National Economy in Moscow. There, he earned his PhD in Economics in 1991.
He also took special courses at the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. in 1994. In 1996, he attended courses at the World Trade Organization in Geneva.
Languages and Family
Besides his native Romanian, Marian Lupu speaks English, French, and Russian. He got married in 1992 and has two children.
Political Career
Marian Lupu began his political career in the early 2000s. He joined the Communist Party and quickly rose through the ranks.
Early Government Roles
In June 2001, Marian Lupu became the Vice Minister of the Economy. Two years later, in August 2003, he was promoted to the full Minister of the Economy. He held this position until March 2005.
Leading the Parliament

After the Communist Party won the 2005 elections, Marian Lupu was chosen as the Speaker of the Moldovan Parliament. He served in this important role from March 2005 to May 2009.
In 2009, he left the Communist Party. He felt it was not possible to change the party from the inside. Soon after, he joined the Democratic Party of Moldova.
Alliance for European Integration
After the July 2009 parliamentary election, Marian Lupu joined other political leaders. He signed the agreement to form the Alliance For European Integration on August 8, 2009. This alliance aimed to bring Moldova closer to Europe.
He was a candidate for President of Moldova for this alliance. However, Nicolae Timofti was elected president on March 16, 2012. On April 25, 2013, Marian Lupu was removed from his position as President of the Moldovan Parliament.

Language and Identity
In Moldova, there has been a discussion about the country's language and identity. Marian Lupu identifies himself as an ethnic Moldovan. He supported keeping "Moldovan language" in the Constitution as the official state language.
He once said that "scientifically, I speak Romanian, but politically, I speak Moldovan." Later, he changed his view, stating that "scientifically is not Romanian anymore... but the Moldovan [language]." He believes in the idea of a distinct Moldovan people and nation, separate from Romania.
Other Views
In 2010, Marian Lupu expressed pride that Moldovan soldiers marched in the 2010 Moscow Victory Day Parade. This was a parade in Moscow celebrating victory in World War II. Some other politicians did not agree with the presence of the Moldovan National Army's Honor Guard Company at this event.
