Moldovan language facts for kids
Moldovan (which is called limba moldovenească in Romanian) is the official language of the country Moldova. It is very similar to the Romanian language. For a long time, the main difference was how it was written. Moldovan used the Cyrillic alphabet, which looks different from the letters we use in English. This was because Moldova was part of the Soviet Union until 1989.
In 1989, Moldova became its own independent country. After this, Moldova started to use the Latin alphabet, which is the same alphabet used in Romania and many other countries around the world. On December 5, 2013, the government of Moldova officially decided that Romanian would be the official language of the country. This decision showed that the two languages are essentially the same.
Moldovan in Transnistria
In a region called Transnistria, which is a part of Moldova that has declared itself independent (but is not recognized by most countries), Moldovan is still one of the official languages. In Transnistria, Moldovan is still written using the Cyrillic alphabet. The other official languages in Transnistria are Russian and Ukrainian.
