Nicolae Timofti (born 22 December 1948) is a Moldovan judge and politician. He served as the President of Moldova from 23 March 2012 to 23 December 2016. Before becoming president, he was in charge of Moldova's Superior Council of Magistrates, which is a group that oversees judges. He was chosen as president by the country's parliament on 16 March 2012.

Early Life and Education

Nicolae Timofti was born in Ciutulești, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time, on 22 December 1948. His parents were Elena and Vasile Timofti, and he has four brothers and sisters. In early 1949, his family moved to Florești.

Sadly, in July 1949, his grandfather, Tudor Timofti, was sent away by the Soviet authorities to a far-off region called Amur, where he passed away in 1953. Nicolae Timofti studied law and graduated from Moldova State University in 1972.

Early Career

Working in the Soviet Era

Before becoming a judge, Nicolae Timofti worked in different jobs. From 1964 to 1965, he was a worker in the road department in Florești. After that, until 1967, he worked as a mechanic.

After finishing university, Timofti spent two years serving in the Soviet Army. In 1976, he started his career as a judge. He worked as a consultant at the Ministry of Justice in the Moldavian SSR. For ten years, from 1980 to 1990, he was a judge on the Supreme Court of the Moldavian SSR.

After Moldova Became Independent

After Moldova gained its independence, Nicolae Timofti continued his work in the legal field. In 2005, he was appointed to the Higher Judicial Chamber. This is an important legal body. Then, in 2011, he became the chairman of the Supreme Council of Magistrates. This council helps manage and oversee the judges in Moldova.

President of Moldova

After being chosen by the parliament, Nicolae Timofti made it a top goal for Moldova to become closer to Europe. He said that this direction "must continue" and that Moldova "has no other future than a European future." This idea of connecting with Europe was already a key policy for Moldova.

Mihai Ghimpu, who was a leader in the Moldovan parliament, described Timofti as "a progressive man." This meant that Timofti was seen as someone who wanted to move Moldova forward.

Personal Life

Nicolae Timofti is married to Margareta Timofti, who is also a lawyer. They have three sons. Their oldest son, Alexei, was born in 1977 and works as a lawyer for the World Bank in Washington. Their second son, Nicolae (Nicu), born in 1980, is a sports journalist in Chișinău. Their youngest son, Ștefan, born in 1989, studies economics in Chișinău.
