Nicolae Timofti (born December 22, 1948) is a Moldovan jurist and politician. A jurist is an expert in law. He served as the fourth President of Moldova from March 23, 2012, to December 23, 2016. Before becoming president, he led Moldova's Superior Magistrate Council. He was chosen as president by the country's parliament on March 16, 2012.

Early Life and Education
Nicolae Timofti was born in Ciutulești, which was then part of the Soviet Union. His parents were Elena and Vasile Timofti. He has four brothers and sisters.
Family History
In early 1949, his family moved to Florești. On July 6, 1949, his grandfather, Tudor Timofti, was sent away by Soviet authorities. He was sent to the Amur region and died there in 1953.
Studying Law
Nicolae Timofti studied law at Moldova State University. He finished his studies and graduated in 1972.
Early Career as a Jurist
After finishing university, Timofti spent two years in the Soviet Army. He then began his career in law.
Working in Justice
In 1976, he started working as a consultant at the Ministry of Justice in Moldova. From 1980 to 1990, he served as a judge on the Supreme Court of Moldova.
A Difficult Decision
In 2013, it became known that in 1987, he was a judge in a case involving a person named Gheorghe David. This person was accused of spreading ideas that were against the government at the time. Timofti later said he was sorry he had to apply a law that he felt was unfair. He explained that as a judge, he had to follow the laws of the time.
After Moldova's Independence
After Moldova became an independent country, Timofti continued his work in the legal system. In 2005, he was appointed to the Higher Judicial Chamber. This is an important legal body. In 2011, he became the chairman of the Supreme Council of Magistrates. This council helps manage the country's judges.
President of Moldova
After being elected by the parliament, Nicolae Timofti focused on Moldova's goal of becoming closer to Europe. This was a key policy for the country.
European Future
He stated that Moldova's European path "must continue." He believed that his country "has no other future than a European future." Many people supported this direction for Moldova.
Personal Life
Nicolae Timofti is married to Margareta Timofti, who is also a lawyer. They have three sons together.
His Sons
Their oldest son, Alexei, was born in 1977. He works as a lawyer for the World Bank in Washington. Their second son, Nicolae (Nicu), was born in 1980 and is a sports journalist in Chișinău. Their youngest son, Ștefan, born in 1989, studies economics in Chișinău.
