Vladas Garastas, born on February 2, 1932, and who passed away on June 10, 2026, was a very important figure in Lithuanian basketball. He was a professional basketball coach and also served as the president of the Lithuanian Basketball Federation. After Lithuania regained its independence, he became the coach of the national team. Vladas Garastas had a remarkable career as a basketball coach, guiding many teams to success. His coaching journey began in 1979 and continued until 1998. He coached both club teams and national teams, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.

Coaching Club Teams

One of his most famous roles was as the head coach for Žalgiris Kaunas from 1979 to 1989. Under his guidance, Žalgiris Kaunas became a dominant force. They won three USSR championship titles in a row (1985, 1986, 1987). The team also finished as runner-up five times (1980, 1983, 1984, 1988, 1989). In 1986, Žalgiris Kaunas won the prestigious Intercontinental Cup and reached the finals of the EuroLeague, showing their strength on the international stage. He also coached other clubs like Prievidza (1990–1992), Atletas Kaunas (1994–1996), and Alita Alytus (1996–1998).

Guiding National Teams

Garastas also took on the important role of coaching national teams. He led the Soviet Union national team from 1989 to 1991. With this team, he helped them win a bronze medal at Eurobasket 1989 and a silver medal at the 1990 FIBA World Championship.

His time with the Lithuanian national team was especially historic. After Lithuania regained its independence, he became their head coach from 1992 to 1997.
