Vladimír Olegovic Zábrodský was an amazing athlete from Czechoslovakia. He was born in Prague on March 7, 1923, and passed away on March 20, 2020. Vladimír was a talented player in both ice hockey and tennis. He won a silver medal in ice hockey at the 1948 Winter Olympics. He also helped his team win the Ice Hockey World Championships twice, in 1947 and 1949. Besides hockey, he was a strong tennis player and part of his country's Davis Cup team.

Ice Hockey Achievements

Vladimír Zábrodský was one of the first people to be added to the IIHF Hall of Fame. This special honor happened in 1997. He played in the top ice hockey league in Czechoslovakia for many years.

He played for three different teams:

  • LTC Prague from 1940 to 1950
  • Spartak ČKD Sokolovo from 1950 to 1960
  • Bohemians ČKD Praha from 1963 to 1965

During his career, he scored an amazing 306 goals!

Tennis Career

Vladimír Zábrodský also played tennis for Czechoslovakia. He was part of the Davis Cup team in 1948, 1955, and 1956. The Davis Cup is a big international team competition in men's tennis.

His first Davis Cup match was in 1948 against Brazil. He played doubles with Jaroslav Drobný and they won their match easily. He also played in the final round of the Europe Zone in 1948. In total, he played five singles matches and five doubles matches for his country. He won two of his singles matches and three of his doubles matches.

Life and Coaching

Vladimír Zábrodský was born in Prague. His mother was from Russia. His brother, Oldřich, was also a hockey player.

In 1965, Vladimír moved to Sweden, where he lived for the rest of his life. He and his wife traveled through Hungary and Yugoslavia to reach Switzerland. There, his brother Oldřich, who was playing hockey in Switzerland, met them.

After moving, Vladimír became an ice hockey coach. He coached for teams like Leksands IF, Djurgårdens IF, and Rögle BK. Later, he went back to tennis and worked as a tennis coach. He passed away in Stockholm on March 20, 2020, at 97 years old.
