Volga is a small place in Indiana, in a part of the state called Jefferson County. It's what we call an "unincorporated community." This means it's not an official town or city with its own local government. Instead, it's a group of homes and buildings that are part of a larger area, in this case, Smyrna Township. People aren't exactly sure where the name Volga came from, but many think it was named after the Volga River in Russia.

A Look Back at Volga's History
Volga was never officially set up as a town. It was mostly known for having a post office and a school. These places helped define the community for many years.
The Volga Post Office
Volga had its own post office for a long time. It opened on May 29, 1856. The very first person in charge of the mail was William J. Chambers. The post office served the community for nearly 50 years before it closed on July 14, 1904.
Schools and Churches in Volga
Education was important in Volga. School leaders bought land for a school house on March 11, 1844. A school building that was still standing in 1989 was built in 1870.
Close by is the Hopewell Baptist Church. This church is a stone building that was built in 1848. The church actually started much earlier. Its first meeting was held on May 16, 1829, at Robert Ford's house. The first church service took place in July 1829 right there in Volga.
Volga in 1890
In 1890, a book called the Indiana Gazetteer and Business Directory described Volga. It said Volga was a village with about 100 people. It was located in Smyrna Township, about 9 miles northwest of Madison. Madison was the county seat, which means it was the main town for the county. It was also the closest place to send or receive shipments and where the nearest bank was. Mail came to Volga three times a week. George Wallace was the postmaster at that time.
Where is Volga Located?
Volga is found on the north side of a stream called Harbert's Creek. This creek flows from east to west. You can find Volga where the Deputy Pike road meets county road 700W.
