Playing Baseball
Starting His Career
Von Joshua was first chosen by the San Francisco Giants in the 1967 January Major League Baseball draft. This is like a special selection process where teams pick new players. Even though the Giants picked him, Joshua decided to sign with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Big Games and Teams
Joshua helped the Dodgers win the National League pennant in 1974. Winning the pennant means a team wins their league championship. This allowed them to play in the 1974 World Series.
In that World Series, the Dodgers played against the Oakland Athletics. The Athletics won the series in five games. During the series, Joshua had four chances to bat as a pinch-hitter. A pinch-hitter is a player who bats in place of another player.
Career Statistics
Over 10 seasons, Von Joshua played in 822 games. He had 2,234 chances to bat. He scored 277 runs and got 610 hits.
He also hit 30 home runs and had 184 Runs Batted In (RBIs). An RBI means a player's hit allowed another player to score a run. His batting average was .273, which is a good score for a hitter.
Coaching Baseball
Working with Teams
After his playing career, Von Joshua became a baseball coach. He worked as a hitting coach for the Albuquerque Dukes for several years in the late 1980s. A hitting coach helps players improve their batting skills.
Later, he was the hitting coach for the Iowa Cubs. In 2009, he became the hitting coach for the Chicago Cubs, a Major League Baseball team. He held this position from June to October of that year. After that, he returned to coach the Iowa Cubs again for the 2010 season.
