Early Life and Music Beginnings

Before becoming a solo artist, Vonda sang as a backup singer for other musicians. In 1987, she got her own record deal. She had her first song on the music charts with "Can't We Try," a duet with Dan Hill. Her first album, Vonda Shepard, came out in 1989. A song from that album, "Don't Cry Ilene," was quite popular. It stayed on the Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary chart for 12 weeks.
Ally McBeal and Big Success

Kelley was creating a new TV show called Ally McBeal. He was looking for a singer whose voice could represent the main character's inner thoughts and feelings. After hearing Vonda perform, he decided she was perfect for the show's soundtrack.
Vonda's biggest hit from the show was the theme song, "Searchin' My Soul." This song was actually from her second album, The Radical Light (1992). She wrote it with Paul Howard Gordon. Another popular song she sang for the show was a Christmas classic, "(Everybody's Waitin' for) The Man with the Bag." It became a favorite holiday song after being featured on an episode of Ally McBeal.
