Robert Beale

Theodore Robert Beale (born August 21, 1968), known by his pen name Vox Day, is an American writer, publisher, and game designer. He started his career in video game development. Later, he began writing science fiction and books about different ideas and topics.

Beale became involved with the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America. He was part of a discussion around the Hugo Awards for science fiction. He also helped start Castalia House, a publishing company.

Early Life and Music

Theodore Beale grew up in Minnesota. His parents are Rebecca and Robert Beale. He finished his studies at Bucknell University in 1990.

From 1992 to 1994, Beale was a member of the band Psykosonik.

Video Game Development

In 1993, Beale and Andrew Lunstad started a video game company called Fenris Wolf. They were working on two games, Rebel Moon Revolution and Traveler. The company closed in 1999 after a legal issue with their publisher.

In 1999, Beale and Lunstad released a game called The War in Heaven. This game was based on stories from the Bible.

Technology Innovations

Beale created a special computer mouse called the WarMouse. This mouse had many buttons, a scroll wheel, and a small joystick for your thumb. It also had memory built into it.

Writing Career

Beale writes under the name Vox Day. This name sounds like the Latin phrase vox Dei, which means "voice of God." He first used this name when writing for a magazine called Computer Gaming World in 1995. He also wrote a weekly video game review column for the St. Paul Pioneer Press. Later, he used the name for an opinion column in WorldNetDaily.

In 2000, Beale published his first novel, The War in Heaven. This book was the first in a series of fantasy novels with religious themes. The series is called The Eternal Warriors. The story explores ideas about good and evil among angels.

In 2004, Beale was a judge for the Nebula Award Novel Jury.

In 2008, Beale published a book called The Irrational Atheist: Dissecting the Unholy Trinity of Dawkins, Harris, and Hitchens. This book looked at and discussed the ideas from books by authors like Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris.

Publishing Companies

Castalia House

In early 2014, Beale started Castalia House, a publishing company in Kouvola, Finland. He works as the main editor there. Castalia House has published books by writers such as John C. Wright and Jerry Pournelle.

In 2016, books published by Castalia House won two Dragon Awards:

  • Best Science Fiction Novel: Somewhither, by John C. Wright
  • Best Apocalyptic Novel: Ctrl-Alt-Revolt! by Nick Cole

In 2017, Beale launched Infogalactic, an online encyclopedia. This website started with content from English Wikipedia. Beale aimed to create a version of the encyclopedia that he felt was free from certain influences.

Arkhaven Comics

In September 2018, Beale announced a new comic book publishing company. He first called it Comicsgate Comics. Later, he changed the name to Arkhaven Comics.

Beale also has channels on YouTube. These channels have many subscribers who follow his content.

Hugo Award Nominations

Beale's works have been nominated for the Hugo Awards. In these awards, voters rank the nominees. In all cases, his nominations were ranked below "No Award" in the final vote.

Personal Life

Beale is married and has several children. He lives with his family in the Canton of Vaud in Switzerland. He also owns Cressier Manor in the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland.

Beale describes himself as a Christian nationalist. He has been described as a leader in certain online political movements.
