Vuollerim is a small village located in northern Sweden. It is part of Jokkmokk Municipality in Norrbotten County. In 2020, about 623 people lived there. The name Vuollerim comes from the Lulesamiska language. It means a place where a river flows quickly but smoothly, without big rapids.
Where is Vuollerim?
Vuollerim is special because it sits where two rivers meet. These are the Lilla Lule River and the Stora Lule River. You can find it along national road 97. This road can take you to Jokkmokk in the northwest. It also leads to Boden in the southeast. The closest train station is in Murjek. It is about 18 kilometers away from the village.
A Look at Vuollerim's Past
People have lived near Vuollerim for a very long time. An ancient settlement was found nearby. It is called Vuollerimbopladsen. This site is about three kilometers northwest of the village. Scientists discovered it in 1983. Researchers from Umeå University found it.
This ancient place is about 6,000 years old! You cannot see the settlement above ground today. However, there is a special museum nearby. It is called Vuollerim 6000. This museum helps visitors learn about the ancient history of the area. It is located two kilometers from the actual site.
The first permanent homes in Vuollerim were built in 1756. People have lived there ever since. The village grew a lot later on. This happened when the Porsi hydroelectric power plant was built. This big power plant was constructed between 1956 and 1961. It brought more people to live and work in Vuollerim.
