Jokkmokk is a small town in Norrbotten County, Lapland, Sweden. It is the main town of Jokkmokk Municipality. In 2010, about 2,786 people lived there.
The name Jokkmokk comes from the Lule Sami language. It means "River's Curve." This is because a winding river flows through the area. Jokkmokk is located just north of the Arctic Circle. This means it gets very cold in winter and has the midnight sun in summer.
Jokkmokk is a very important place for the Sámi people. The Sámi are the native people of this northern region. The town has several important places related to Sámi culture. These include an education center and the Ájtte museum. There is also an office for the Sámi Parliament of Sweden here. During World War II, Jokkmokk also served as a safe place for Sámi people who had to leave Norway.
The Famous Jokkmokk Market
One of the most exciting events in Jokkmokk is the annual Jokkmokk Market. This market has been happening since 1605! It is a very old tradition.
Every year, on the first Thursday in February, thousands of people come to Jokkmokk. They gather for concerts, exhibitions, and trade. It is one of the most important social events for the Sámi people in Sápmi. Sápmi is the cultural region where the Sámi people live.
The market is a great place to experience Sámi culture. You can find traditional crafts, food, and music. Be prepared for the cold, though! Temperatures during the market can drop as low as −40°C (which is also −40°F).
Jokkmokk's Climate
Jokkmokk has a very cold climate. It is known as a subarctic climate. This means it has long, very cold winters. The town is located inland and far north in Sweden.
In summer, Jokkmokk usually has mild temperatures. Because it is north of the Arctic Circle, it experiences the midnight sun. This means the sun stays visible for 24 hours a day during parts of the summer.
Winters are dark and very cold. Even though it's far north, Jokkmokk doesn't have a full polar night. This is when the sun doesn't rise at all. However, the sun stays very low in the sky during winter.
Jokkmokk is about 250 meters (820 feet) above sea level. It is also at the base of the Scandinavian Mountains. These factors make it one of the coldest towns in Sweden during winter.
