The Scandinavian Mountains are a long chain of mountains. They stretch across the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. These mountains run through three countries: Norway, Sweden, and a small part of Finland.
On the western side, the mountains drop sharply into the North Sea and Norwegian Sea. This creates the famous deep, narrow inlets called fjords in Norway. Further north, the mountains form the border between Norway and Sweden. They even cross the Arctic Circle, where it is very cold. The part of the range in Finland is mostly made up of smaller hills.

Tallest Peaks
The Scandinavian Mountains are home to some very tall peaks. Each country has its own highest point within the range.
Norway's Highest Mountain
Galdhøpiggen is the highest mountain in the entire range. It is located in southern Norway. This peak stands at an impressive 2,469 metres (8,100 ft) above sea level.
Sweden's Highest Mountain
On the Swedish side, Kebnekaise is the tallest peak. It reaches 2,104 m (6,903 ft) high. This mountain is a popular spot for hikers.
Finland's Highest Mountain
The highest point in Finland within this range is Halti. It is 1,324 m (4,344 ft) tall. While not as high as the others, it is still a significant peak for Finland.
Glaciers and Ice
The Scandinavian Mountains are quite close to the Arctic and the North Atlantic Ocean. Because of this, they have many ice fields and glaciers. These are large areas of ice that stay frozen all year round. They were formed over many thousands of years.
What are Fjords?
Fjords are one of the most amazing features of the Norwegian coast. They are long, narrow inlets of the sea. They are surrounded by steep cliffs on both sides. Fjords were carved out by ancient glaciers moving slowly towards the sea. They are very deep and beautiful.
