Vyda Kęsgailaitė-Ragulskienė was an amazing Lithuanian scientist, inventor, and professor. She made history by becoming the first woman in Lithuania to achieve the highest degree in engineering, called a habilitation.

Early Life and Education

Vyda Kęsgailaitė-Ragulskienė was born in 1931. Her birthplace was a small village in Lithuania called Dapšiai.

In 1955, she finished her studies at the Kaunas Polytechnical Institute. This was a big step in her journey to becoming a scientist.

After graduating, she started working as a research associate. She worked at the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences until 1967. Later, from 1967 to 1993, she worked at the Kaunas Polytechnical Institute.

Vyda was married to another engineer named Kazimieras Ragulskis.

Her Scientific Work

Vyda Kęsgailaitė-Ragulskienė achieved many important things in science. In 1965, she earned her first doctorate degree in engineering. This showed her deep understanding of the field.

Later, in 1973, she earned the special title of "doctor of sciences." This is also known as a habilitated doctor. In 1977, she became a full professor of sciences.

She wrote parts of six big research books, called monographs. She also wrote around 200 shorter research papers. Her ideas led to 97 patents for new inventions.

For her important research, she received the State Prize of the Lithuanian SSR in 1983. This was a major award for her work. She also helped more than 50 students with their own thesis papers.

Vyda's research helped us understand "non-linear vibro-impact systems." These are systems that vibrate and hit things in complex ways. She used both experiments and computer analysis to get her results.

She then shared her findings in her research papers. Her discoveries also helped create new inventions. These inventions were so new and useful that she was granted patents for them.

Other Contributions

Besides her science work, Vyda Kęsgailaitė-Ragulskienė also helped with other projects. She translated a book called Samogitia: The Unknown in History from English into Lithuanian.

She also helped gather information for a large encyclopedia. This encyclopedia was about the officers of the Lithuanian Armed Forces from 1918 to 1953. She even wrote about the history of her own village, Dapšiai.
