William Henry Lanier (1855–1929) was a very important educator in Mississippi. He lived during a time of big changes in the late 1800s and early 1900s. He is remembered for his work in schools and for a high school named after him.
Early Life and Education
William Henry Lanier was born in September 1855. He was born into slavery in Autauga County, Alabama. This was a difficult time for many people.
After slavery ended, William Henry Lanier worked hard to get an education. He studied at several colleges. These included Tougaloo College, Oberlin College, and Fisk University. He then earned his B.A. degree from Roger Williams University in Nashville, Tennessee.
A Career in Education
Mr. Lanier started his career teaching in small towns across Mississippi. He was a dedicated teacher. His skills and leadership were soon noticed.
From 1899 to 1905, he became the president of Alcorn State University. This was a major role for an educator at that time. After his time at Alcorn, he led the African American schools in Yazoo City. He worked there until 1911.
In 1911, he moved to Jackson. He was chosen to lead the African American public schools there. He became the principal of Robertson High School. He continued to lead the Jackson schools until he passed away in 1929.
Personal Life
In 1900, William Henry Lanier married Elizabeth Ernie Dabney. They had two children together.
His Passing
William Henry Lanier died in November 1929 in Jackson. Many people respected his work. Six presidents of different African American colleges spoke at his funeral. All African American public schools in Jackson closed on that day. This was done to honor him and his contributions.
Lasting Legacy
William Henry Lanier left a strong mark on education in Mississippi. Today, Lanier High School in Jackson, Mississippi, is named after him. This school continues his legacy of learning and leadership.
