History of WCW Nitro
When Nitro first started, it began a big competition. This competition was with the WWF (now WWE). People called this time the Monday Night Wars. It lasted for almost six years.
The nWo Storyline
WCW created a famous storyline called the nWo. This story helped them get many more viewers than the WWF. WCW beat the WWF in TV ratings for 84 weeks in a row. This made WWF owner Vince McMahon change his shows. He started a new style of wrestling called The Attitude Era. But as the nWo story got old, fans started watching the WWF again.
The Infamous Spoilers
On January 4, 1999, something big happened on Nitro. The announcer, Tony Schiavone, told everyone the results of the WWF's show, Raw. He said that Mick Foley would win the WWF World title. Schiavone thought this would make people not want to watch Raw.
But his plan did not work. Many Nitro viewers changed the channel to Raw. They were excited to see Foley, who was an underdog, win the championship. After Foley won, fans switched back to Nitro. However, from that week on, Raw almost always beat Nitro in the ratings. WCW never became as popular as it was before.
