WIN Waste Innovations is an American company that helps manage and dispose of waste. It is based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Many people know the company by its older name, Wheelabrator.

The company started in 1908. Back then, it supplied equipment for foundries, which are places where metal is melted and shaped. In 1933, they created a special machine called the Wheelabrator. This machine used airless blasting to clean things.

Later, in 1982, the company built its first large-scale waste incinerator in Saugus, Massachusetts. An incinerator is a facility that burns waste to reduce its volume and sometimes create energy. Over the years, the company changed its name and ownership several times. In 2021, it merged with nine other waste companies to become WIN Waste Innovations.

The Story of WIN Waste Innovations

WIN Waste Innovations has a long history, starting in 1908 in Piqua, Ohio. It began as the Homogeneous Sand Mixer Co. As the company grew, its name changed several times.

Early Names and Growth

  • In 1910, it became the Sand Mixing Machine Co.
  • By 1920, it was known as the American Foundry Equipment Co.
  • After their Wheelabrator product became very popular, the company changed its name again in 1945 to the American Wheelabrator and Equipment Co.
  • In 1955, it simplified its name to the Wheelabrator Corporation.
  • In 1971, it joined with four other companies to form Wheelabrator-Frye.

Changes in Ownership

In 1985, a company called AlliedSignal bought Wheelabrator. However, Wheelabrator soon became a separate company again, known as the Henley Group.

In 1990, Waste Management, Inc. bought a large part of the company. They owned most of it until 2014. Then, Waste Management sold the company to Energy Capital Partners. In 2019, Macquarie Infrastructure Partners bought the company. Finally, in 2021, it merged with other waste companies owned by Macquarie to create WIN Waste Innovations.

How Incinerators Work

WIN Waste Innovations operates many incinerators. These facilities are important for managing waste that cannot be recycled.

What Incinerators Do

Incinerators burn trash at very high temperatures. This process helps to:

  • Reduce the amount of waste that goes into landfills.
  • Sometimes, create energy (like electricity) from the heat produced by burning the waste.

Locations of Incinerators

WIN Waste Innovations operates incinerators in several states across the United States. Some of these locations include:

  • Wheelabrator Baltimore (Maryland)
  • Wheelabrator Bridgeport (Connecticut)
  • Wheelabrator Dutchess County (New York)
  • Wheelabrator Concord (New Hampshire)
  • Wheelabrator Falls (Pennsylvania)
  • Wheelabrator Gloucester (New Jersey)
  • Wheelabrator Hudson Falls (New York)
  • Wheelabrator Lisbon (Connecticut)
  • Wheelabrator Millbury (Massachusetts)
  • Wheelabrator North Andover (Massachusetts)
  • Wheelabrator Saugus (Massachusetts)
  • Wheelabrator South Broward (Florida)
  • Wheelabrator Westchester (New York)
