The History of WPXI
Starting as WIIC-TV
On September 1, 1957, this TV station first started broadcasting. Back then, it was known as WIIC-TV.
A person named Bill Cardille was the very first face seen on this new channel. Some of the first shows that aired on WIIC-TV were Studio Wrestling and Chiller Theatre.
New Ownership and Name Change
In 1964, the station was sold to its current owner, Cox Enterprises.
Later, in 1981, the station's name was changed to WPXI-TV. The "P" stands for Pittsburgh, and "XI" is the Roman numeral for 11. This name change helped people remember it was Pittsburgh's Channel 11.
Even today, the name WIIC is still used in Pittsburgh. However, it's for a smaller channel that mostly shows music videos.
