WWIN-FM (95.9 FM) is a popular radio station in Baltimore. It is known as "Magic 95.9". The station plays a mix of urban adult contemporary music. This includes songs from the 1960s all the way to today.

Magic 95.9 is owned by a company called Urban One. Its main broadcast tower is located near Glen Burnie, Maryland. The station's studios are in Gwynn Oak, Maryland.

The History of Magic 95.9

Early Days of 95.9 FM

The radio station at 95.9 FM started broadcasting in 1964. Back then, it was called WISZ-FM. It played country music for a while. Later, it became WBKZ and was known as Z-96. It played adult contemporary music.

In the early 1980s, the station changed owners. It became WWIN-FM. At first, it played the same music as its sister station, WWIN (AM). Then, it started playing a softer style of R&B music. This style is now called "urban adult contemporary."

Becoming "Hot 95.9"

Around 1987, the station tried a new style of music. It changed its name to WHTE, then WGHT. It was called "Hot 95.9". This station played popular hit songs. However, it didn't do as well as other stations playing similar music.

So, in 1989, the station changed its music style again. It went back to playing urban adult music. Two famous radio hosts, Harold Pompey and Don "Cleo" Brooks, helped with this change. They called the station "The Best Songs and No Rap."

The Rise of "Magic"

In 1992, a new owner, Cathy Hughes, bought the station. Her company, Almic Broadcasting, took over. They quickly changed the station's name to "Majic 95.9". A few years later, the spelling changed to "Magic 95.9".

Almic Broadcasting later became Radio One. This company still owns Magic 95.9 today. Many talented people have worked at WWIN-FM over the years. Some of them include Curtis Anderson, Tim Watts, and Monique.

Today, Magic 95.9 plays popular national radio shows. These include The Tom Joyner Morning Show and The D.L. Hughley Show.

Sister Station

WWIN-FM shares its call letters with another station, WWIN. That station is known as "Spirit 1400." It plays urban gospel music in Baltimore.
