The Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation, also known as Wabigoon First Nation, is a group of First Nations people. They are part of the Saulteaux people and speak a language called Anishinaabemowin. Their traditional name in this language is Waabigoniiw Saaga'iganiiw Anishinaabeg.

This community lives in the Kenora District in northwestern Ontario, Canada. Their home is about 19 kilometers (about 12 miles) southeast of the town of Dryden, Ontario. In January 2008, there were 533 people officially registered with the First Nation. About 175 of these people lived on their reserve land.

History of Wabigoon Lake

The land for the Wabigoon Lake reserve was first set aside in 1884. The government of Ontario officially approved it in 1915.

Over time, some members of the Wabigoon Band of Saulteaux moved. Those living on the western part of the reserve moved away. They then formed a new community called the Eagle Lake First Nation.

The people who stayed on the eastern part of the reserve made an important change. On August 7, 1987, they officially changed their name. They became known as the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation.

How Wabigoon Lake is Governed

The Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation chooses its leaders using a system called the Act Electoral System. This system helps them elect a Chief and four councillors. These leaders work together to make decisions for the community.

Current Leaders

The current Chief of the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation is Clayton Wetelainen. The four councillors are Laurel Spalding, Ron Williams, and Tyson Williams. The fourth councillor will be chosen in a special election in January 2022.

Working with Other Nations

The Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation is a part of Treaty 3. This is an important agreement made between First Nations and the Canadian government.

Because of this treaty, they are also a member of the Bimose Tribal Council. This council helps different First Nations in the area work together. They are also part of the Grand Council of Treaty 3. This is a larger group that represents many First Nation governments. These governments are located in northwestern Ontario and southeastern Manitoba.

Wabigoon Lake Reserve Land

The Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation has its own special land. This land is called the Wabigoon Lake 27 Indian reserve. It covers an area of about 5,209.2 hectares (which is about 12,872 acres). This land is set aside for the use and benefit of the First Nation.
