The Wahidi Sultanate of Bir Ali was a small state in a region called the Aden Protectorate. This area was once part of the British Empire. The capital city of this sultanate was Bi'r `Ali, located right on the coast of the Gulf of Aden. A sultanate is a country ruled by a leader called a Sultan.
The last Sultan of Bir Ali was Alawi ibn Salih ibn Ahmad Al Wahidi. In 1967, his rule ended. The state was then dissolved when the People's Republic of South Yemen was formed. Today, this area is part of the country of Yemen.
History
The Wahidi Sultanate was an older state that existed for a long time. We don't know exactly when it started.
Around 1830, the original Wahidi Sultanate divided into four smaller states. These new states were:
- The Wahidi Sultanate of Ba´l Haf
- The Wahidi Sultanate of `Azzan
- The Wahidi Sultanate of Bi´r `Ali `Amaqin (which is the one this article is about)
- The Wahidi Sultanate of Habban
Later, on May 4, 1881, the states of Ba´l Haf and `Azzan joined together. In 1888, this combined state became a British protectorate. This meant that Britain would protect the state, but the local rulers still managed their own affairs.
In 1895, Bi´r `Ali `Amaqin also came under British protection. On October 23, 1962, the joined sultanate was renamed the Wahidi Sultanate. However, Bi´r `Ali and Habban remained as smaller, separate sultanates under its rule.
Finally, on November 29, 1967, all these states were abolished. This happened when the People's Republic of South Yemen became an independent country.

The leaders of the Wahidi Sultanate of Bi´r `Ali `Amaqin were called Sultan Bi'r `Ali `Amaqi al-Wahidi. They were the main rulers of this area.
