A lumberman named William A. Heartt first visited this area in 1852. He moved there the next year. He became the first postmaster in 1857 and helped plan the settlement. The name "Wahjamega" is a special kind of abbreviation. It comes from the first letters of three partners who ran a sawmill there: William A. Heartt, James A. Montgomery, and Edgar George Avery.
The post office in Wahjamega closed in 1905, reopened for a while in 1914, and then closed again in 1940. This settlement was later included when the Michigan Farm Colony for Epileptics, now called the Caro Center, was built in the area.
